Light Adjustable Lens

The First and Only Cataract Lens That Is Customizable After Surgery

The Light Adjustable Lens (LAL) is made of a special photosensitive material which, when exposed to ultraviolet (UV) light, changes the shape and power of your implanted lens. The LAL is implanted through the standard cataract procedure. After your eye has healed, light treatments are performed by your eye doctor with the Light Delivery Device (LDD) in order to customize your vision. Each non-invasive light treatment only takes a few minutes. You will have the unique ability to adjust and preview your vision until it meets your personal desires and lifestyle requirements. The Light Adjustable Lens delivers superior vision outcomes that non-adjustable IOLs cannot match.

Am I A Candidate for the Light Adjustable Lens?

Most cataract patients are candidates for the Light Adjustable Lens, particularly if they want more precise vision and to eliminate the need for eyeglasses. You should not receive the Light Adjustable Lens if you have:

  • significant pre-existing macula disease
  • sensitivity to UV light
  • uncontrollable eye movements
  • a history of herpes in the eye

You also need to be able to follow your eye doctor’s instructions closely. After receiving the Light Adjustable Lens, you must wear special UV-protective glasses for approximately four to six weeks. If you are not prepared to follow these instructions, you should discuss your options with your cataract surgeon.
